Having played around with my phones for a while now, I was curious as to whether there was a method to flash it via ROM, because the OTA (Over the Air) update's not available in New Zealand (then again, nor is the phone according to the HTC site.
)**DISCLAIMER**
I followed these steps and my phone successfully flashed to FroYo 2.2.
If something goes wrong with your phone, I can accept no responsibility
Remember to backup your data before you start, and if you are unfamiliar with flashing ROMs, read up on that too.
Root access is not required, but will be lost if you perform this update.
In essence, the steps below walk you through:
- Creating a 'Gold Card' to debrand your phone (you will need a 2GB SD card)
- Installing HTC Sync
- Flashing a World Wide English version of Sense to Downgrade to a lower version than the Desire shipped with
- Flashing the 2.2 FroYo ROM
PRE-STEP 1: Create a Gold Card to debrand your phone. Many imports will fail to flash due to 'Customer ID Errors', using the Gold Card removes this issue. Follow these instructions to create your Gold Card.
PRE-STEP 2: Get a backup of your current ROM. Go to Settings > About Phone > Software Information and note the Baseband version and Software number.
Next, check the ROM Depository for one matching those details. If you can find it, download it in case you want to restore back to what you have now.
STEP 1 -Download and install HTC Sync.
Once installed plug your phone into your PC using the USB cable and let it install the drivers. You may need to restart the PC once installed.
STEP 2 - Download the HTC WWE (World Wide English) 2.2 FroYo update
This is an Unbranded generic HTC ROM.
As with all ROMs, this executable file will overwrite your existing ROM with the WWE version.
Save the file to a handy location, we will need it later.
STEP 3 - Installing the WWE ROM.
Plug your phone into your PC and launch HTC Sync on your PC. Once HTC Sync detects your Desire, doubleclick the RUU you downloaded in step two.
Read all the warnings and tick the boxes when asked to.
The phone will reboot and the HTC logo will be displayed.
When the update begins, progress bars will be seen on the phone and the RUU application.
If the drivers weren't installed properly in step one the phone just displays the HTC screen without moving to the progress bars. and the RUU comes up with an error because it cannot enter the Bootloader.
DON’T WORRY!!. Your phone will be fine. Just close the RUU and restart it by doubleclicking the executable file.
The process will continue, just tick the boxes as before.
Once this has completed, you will be running a generic FroYo ROM.
Check your software version under Settings>About Phone>Software information
What you are looking for is: Baseband version 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20 and Software number 2.09.405.8.
If your numbers are the same as these, you are now rocking the FroYo.
